Rare Behind the Scenes Photos from The Empire Strikes Back

It seems like never before seen pictures from the making of the original Star Wars trilogy are popping up all the time. I especially love this recent set that just surfaced though. Taken during the making of 2nd movie in the trilogy, The Empire Strikes Back, the photos give a sense of how much fun was really being had on set. It's great to see that the cast got along so well working on such an important part of cinematic history.

Street Memories by Nacho Ormaechea

Street Memories is a series by Nacho Ormaechea that takes the silhouettes of random city dwellers and fills them in with another image. The anonymity of these individuals makes us curious of who they are or what expressions they might have had when these photos were taken. We then take the only clues, if clues at all, to their personalities from the images they are filled with. I especially enjoy this series because the images chosen to fill the silhouettes contrast extremely with their immediate surroundings, which makes us think further of what complex lives these people may live beyond what we may initially think if we saw them in these settings.

Abstract Shapes in Paris Captured by Philipp Klinger

Without a doubt, Paris makes for some beautiful cityscape photography. Philipp Klinger doesn't take the traditional approach to it though. His photography captures something more--the city in a way like most have not seen it before. The abstract nature of each location in these photographs is just amazing. It's quite a treat to see Paris in such a unique way.

Ant Tales by Andrey Pavlov

These photos by Andrey Pavlov are just incredible. Using real ants, he has created a series that look like screenshots from a well executed animated feature film. "Ant Tales" looks like it required a lot of patience to achieve not to mention a ton of post production work, but the results are just unbelievable. Each shot is so clean and well done. Brilliant work.

1 to 100 Years Project by Edouard Janssens

1 to 100 Years Project is a portrait project from photographer Edouard Janssens in which he has captured 100 women and 100 men from ages 1 to 100. All of the subjects were participants who signed up through the project's website (excluding the kids). At first without a closer look, I thought it was the progression of one person throughout their entire life. It's amazing how interconnected we all are, and how a thing like age can affect everybody just the same. Very cool concept and probably the first I've seen of its kind to such a large scale.

An Eternally Burning House by Carrie Schneider

This powerful series appropriately titled, Burning House is by Carrie Schneider. The photos show a house that seems to be eternally burning, throughout different times of the day and throughout the seasons. To create this timelapse effect, Carrie built the same 8x6 wooden house for each photograph and canoed it to the little island during different times of the year. She photographed the burning house at different stages so it would look like the burning was progressing in each photo. The composition she chooses to photograph the house in is fantastic choice. You get the large space of unmoving serenity of the landscape contrasted with the small space of roaring flames. Simply awe-inspiring.

Jose Romussi Remixes Vintage Photos With Colorful Threads

Jose Romussi isn't a photographer, but he is a mixed media artist. As such, the creative world is literally at his disposable. In this project series, Romussi takes old vintage photos and brings colorful new life to them by way of multi-colored threading. The mix of color on black and white along with the subject content of dancers makes for a "new" photo series that really pops.

Martin Waldbauer’s Surreal Illusions

I don't know how Martin Waldbauer can claim to be a total amateur on his 500px page when this set of photographs from his shows just the opposite. I love the sense of creativity it took to develop the concepts for each. Most of them really cause you to look twice and wonder how he accomplished the concept.

Chocolate Suspended in Air by NAM

This quite amazing collection of photographs was put together by Japan-based art collective NAM as a series of advertisements. Instead of relying on CGI and post-work to achieve the effect, the items in the photos were instead suspended by complex networks of string. What is cool is that the strings actually add to the aesthetic of the photographs rather than take away from them. Beautiful work.

Unique Portraits of Classical Musicians by Nikolaj Lund

When I think of classical music, musicians who are more reserved and in control come to mind--especially in a formal orchestral setting. For that very reason, this very different take on portraits of such musicians by Denmark-based photographer Nikolaj Lund come across as very striking to me.

Each photograph screams out with creativity and begs to be looked at. The very way in which they're completely the opposite of what I would think when I picture classical music in my mind is why these images are so interesting. Definitely a very unique take and one that I personally feel worked very well.
